This is the south slope of Little Round
Top, also known as Vincent's Spur. By sheer chance, Col. Strong Vincent
got his brigade to this spot in time to turn back the Confederate attack
on July 2, 1863. He was was mortally wounded on this spot and was promoted
to general posthumously. The small tablet placed in his honor was only
the second monument on the battlefield, erected August 1, 1878. Up on
the hill is the monument to the 44th and 12th New York Infantry, also
under Vincent's command. |
