The Trust also promotes educational programs and heritage tourism initiatives to inform the public about the war and the fundamental conflicts that sparked it. The Civil War Preservation Trust has helped to save more than 14,900 acres of Civil War battlefields. That's land at more than 81 Civil War battlefields in 18 states! A portion of every sale of Virtual Gettysburg goes to the Civil War Preservation trust to assist in preserving our battlefields.

American Battlefield Protection Program
The American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) promotes the preservation of significant historic battlefields associated with wars on American soil. The goals of the program are 1) to protect battlefields and sites associated with armed conflicts that influenced the course of our history, 2) to encourage and assist all Americans in planning for the preservation, management, and interpretation of these sites, and 3) to raise awareness of the importance of preserving battlefields and related sites for future generations. The ABPP focuses primarily on land use, cultural resource and site management planning, and public education.

The Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association, Inc.
The GBPA was founded in 1959 as the first public/private partnership at Gettysburg.  Over the years, the GBPA played a continuous role in purchasing endangered battlefield land.  Such properties, like the Meals farm, Timbers farm, Wolf farm, Taney farm, the Colgrove tract, the Willoughby Run tract, the East Cavalry field tract, and other parcels have been saved from urban development and commercialism.

The Gettysburg Monument Project
The Gettysburg Monument Project was started in 1997, when tours of the Gettysburg National Military Park began revealing the cracks of time. These monuments were raised to honor the memories of the troops who fought at Gettysburg. Many of Pennsylvania's monuments were erected by the Commonwealth and they contain the state seal. Others were raised by private organizations, survivors, the federal government, etc. the Pennsylvania Memorial »
(click photos to enlarge) The Park Service inherited the problem of monument restoration and preservation, and park staff has tried to do its best with the resources available. Not all of the monuments are in need of serious repair, however many are. We need to address not only the serious needs, but must also keep in mind that it is more cost-effective to take good care now of those monuments that only need general cleaning and repair work, before they too become serious and expensive problems.

Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg
Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg is a  national leader in battlefield landscape preservation, land protection, monument restoration, and education. FNPG's 21,000 members and supporters nationwide uphold the organization's mission to support, protect, and enhance--on behalf of all generations of American people--the resources associated with the National Parks at Gettysburg, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Eisenhower National Historic Site. To date, the Friends has spent $5,215,000 for preservation at Gettysburg.
